Dr. John Chappell Biography:
Born in Richmond, Virginia, he was severely asthmatic from a young age. Doctors informed his parents that if he did not exert himself and continued on a regimen of various medications, he might live into his forties. His parents, however, reared him on a biblically-based diet and exercise, to the best of their abilities. As a result, asthmatic symptoms were no longer detectable by his senior year of high school. Since that time, he wrestled in college, boxed, kick-boxed, and ran four marathons.

From the Desk of Dr. John Chappell:
Subject: Health, Disease, and Physical Death
True health and physical death are the two poles on a continuum of being, with disease lying somewhere between the two. True health is not just the absence of disease, but rather the optimal expression of the physical, and spiritual. The manual for this is God’s Holy Writ—The Bible.

While the spiritual dimensions of the Bible are readily apparent, unfortunately, many people are unaware that God gives a directive for optimal physical health (Deut 7:12-15) and a statement of the consequences for not following His directive (Deut 28:58-61).To summarize, God stated, “If you obey My Laws, Commandments, and Statutes, you will have none of the diseases of Egypt [e.g. lower bowel cancer, arthritis, and tooth decay as ascertained by examination of the archeological remains of mummies] and never get sick. If you do not obey My Laws, Commandments, and Statutes, you will have all the diseases of Egypt and sicknesses that are not even yet known”.

All the Laws and Commandments hang on the following two and are easily understood, although not always obeyed:
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength. And love your neighbor as
yourself (Matt 22:37-40).

Whereas the Statutes (i.e. Way of Life—how to eat, clean versus unclean foods (Lev. 11), exercise (Exod 23:12), and not internalizing stress (Exod 23:14-16), etc.) are somewhat more complex and often not obeyed in today’s depleted and toxic environment.

With man’s cooking (Exod 12:8; 16:23; Lev 6:21, etc.) and agricultural practices (Exod 9:31-32; 23:10-11) being at variance with God’s prescribed methods (e.g., utilization of pesticides, genetic engineering, synthetic fertilization, etc.), even the clean or fit foods do not contain the nutrient density that God originally intended. Additionally, the toxic burden of our environment puts excessive strain on our bodies to eliminate poisons with which God never desired our systems to be bombarded. This heightens the demand for even more nutrients in order to process and flush out the environmental toxins.

Therefore, any approach to health should take as its starting point a new fidelity to God’s Statues for living. Supplementation needs to be attend to in order to get back to the nutrient density of food at the time God’s Statutes were written in order to reap the promises of His Word. And the further along the continuum that health has decreased, even to the point of disease, more nutrients must be supplied (Ezek 47:12—i.e., herbs are for your medicine).

Therefore, my approach to working with people is to teach them God’s Word and attempt to get them back as close as possible to God’s design for health and well being. These principles are timeless and have not changed (e.g. stress management: Matt 6:27, Phil 4:6). Numerous studies supporting the notion that exercise is necessary and beneficial for health, that diets closest to the Biblical Statutes produce higher degrees of health and lower incidences of disease (e.g. The Mediterranean Diet), and that supplementation is beneficial to health and that some people had their health restored from disease states while following a regimen of supplementation can be found in The Journal of the American Medical Association , The Journal of the American College of Nutrition, The British Medical Journal, and Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, to name a few.
